Searchable Databases
These databases provide direct access to titles (and in some cases) abstracts of primary and secondary scientific literature. Searchable databases for
specific taxonomic groups are included under the Taxonomy and Systematics heading below. In the Minnesota Waters section you will also find a couple of searchable sites that provide information about specific
Minnesota lakes and stream.
- FirstSearch: a powerful, but fee based service that requires an
access code (student researchers in Aquatic Biology see Dann)
- CARL Unover: Free searches and a good place to start (if you can spare $25 you might
also want to check out Reveal, another nifty CARL service.
- The Universities Water Information Network provides access to a searchable database of water resources abstracts. This is a great site for students information about
physics, chemistry, and geology of freshwater systems.
- Oceanography on the net -- Scripps Institution of Oceanography Library.
Information Resources
General
- "Tree of Life" is an on-going project attempting to present a comprehensive overview of evolutionary relationships among taxa. This is a collaborative
effort of some of the best evolutionary scholars and researchers and is an excellent resource.
Freshwater Invertebrates
Fish Links
Miscellaneous highly-derived sarcopterygians
- DUCKDATA: a bibliographic database of North American waterfowl (Anatidae) and their wetland habitats.

Software
- Populus, a comprehensive package of computer models in evolutionary ecology, is available for download.
1) Download the software to a blank disk or directly to your hard-drive and run the executeable file to expand the program. Have fun!
- Curve Expert 1.3, an handy shareware tool for fitting equations to data -- you've got to see it to believe it! (and it is available for evaluation without cost or obligation).
- BioStat, a freely distributed program for computing biological statistics. I haven't used it yet myself but I have heard good things through the electronic grapevine.
- Nesbitt Software, home of WebEdit, IMO the coolest little webpage editor available for the money and you can download and use a fully functional demo version free for a month.
- Soft Seek is a great way to find freeware and software on the web. See what you can find.

- Executable Word Perfect Envoy files (including viewer and printer interface)
- Current version of my resume/CV.
- Use this link to download a copy of Checklist of Minnesota Fishes.
- Test Links: Syllabus for Seminar in Aquatic Biology and Spreadsheet Exercise 1
- Quattro Pro worksheet pages for fisheries and aquatic ecology applications. Download
files, open in Quattro or import to other spreadsheet programs and follow instructions provided.

- Opera internet browser -- an amazingly compact and fast alternative to Netscape and Internet Explorer. Download and run the single self-installing
file and give it a try -- you won't be disappointed! [Windows NT/95 Version].
- Use this link to download a copy of Event Timing, a handy little program written by Dr. James Richards (Math and Computer Science, Bemidji State University). The program uses
taps on the space bar to record intervals between events (e.g., fish ventilations) and outputs means and standard deviations.
- The big two, Nature and Science provide limited free access and expanded services for registered users and paid subscribers.
As weekly publications, they provide very current research and science news.
